March favorites (trying something new)
I don’t have any recurring blog posts about my favorite things, but I would be lying if I said I didn’t want to shout my favorite things from the rooftops. This is what having a personal blog is all about, right? This blog post will include my current favorite:
book
TV show
film
hobby
Additionally, this blog will be short and sweet like my last blog post.
I often get wrapped up in long-form blog posts about traveling, inspiration, and personal style. I’m creating a monthly favorites topic as a way to overcome that perfectionism, and just keep a diary of things I’ve enjoyed every month.
I hope you all enjoy it. I’d love to know your favorites too, so comment them below or DM me on instagram.
Favorite book: Brooklyn by Colm Toibin
I saw Brooklyn (2015) years back, because we were screening it at the Uptown Theatre, and I was the usher that week. I collectively saw the movie in fragments about 5 times. Brooklyn wasn’t available for streaming anywhere, but I stumbled upon the book (it's fiction, and the book was adapted to a screenplay) and decided that it was better than nothing, and so I bought it for 2 dollars at Goodwill.
Brooklyn is about an Irish girl emigrating to Brooklyn, NY in post World War II America, where she transitions to her new surroundings, eventually meeting and falling for an Italian boy. I enjoyed the book, reading it in less than a week. For that reason alone, it’s my favorite book this month. With that being said, I only read one other book this month, and that was Bridget Jones’ Diary, which I have to say is the worst book of the month. I could rant about how outdated it was in another blog post, but it doesn’t hold up to the test of time, so… worst book this month.
In summary, read Brooklyn if you like romance and history. Read Bridget Jones if you enjoy self inflicted torture.
Favorite TV Show: Selling Sunset
If there’s one thing you need to know about me, it's that I love reality TV. Growing up, my sister Bethany and I thrived on classics such as Laguna Beach, Jersey Shore, Keeping up with the Kardashians, and Bad Girls Club. Admittedly, I have fallen far off of the reality TV bandwagon in the last decade. That all changed when I found a show about rich women selling houses in LA.
I started Selling Sunset around Christmas, and I took my time catching up, and right now I’m almost finished with Season 4. Just know, I’m obsessed. My favorite girl is Chrishelle, because she’s so cute and sweet. If you love drama and mansions, definitely watch this show, because its great escapism.
Movie: Drive My Car (2021)
Get your popcorn and an ergonomic pillow, because this movie is 3 hours long. Drive My Car, directed by Ryusuke Hamaguchi, follows a man and his driver around Japan. I really don’t want to give the plot away, but this film is 5/5 stars for me, and I hope it wins every award it’s nominated for.
You can currently stream this film on HBOmax. This weekend is the best time, because the Oscars premiere this Sunday.
Hobby: Creating a plant shelf out of wooden crates
Recently, I was considering buying a bamboo shelf for my apartment’s plants. I have one good window, which you all have seen a million times. It’s my kitchen window, and it faces East, so this is the only place that my plants can thrive in the entire apartment, since the south side light is blocked by the neighboring structure.
Like I said last week, I love thrifting and buying things second hand. I told my boyfriend Eric I wanted a shelf system for my plants made out of wood. I was specifically imagining wooden crates that I could stack on top of one another, so there’d be sunshine peeking through the slats.
Right after I told him about my plant shelf dreams, Eric found four produce crates in the trash near his work. He hosed them down and brought them home. Now I’m just sanding them when I have a chance, and I’m hoping to have my plant shelf completed in a few more days! I’ve been working on them maybe once or twice a week since the start of March, and I can’t wait to post about it in April!
Thanks for reading, friends!
Thanks for reading my March Favorites blog post! I know this is obviously not the most riveting content, but I’ve gotta start documenting my favorite things somewhere! I don’t want to feel bogged down by the idea of what a perfect blog should be. If you have any books, shows, movies, or projects you’d like to share, feel free to comment below!
