What is up, my friends? Today I’m here to explain my 2024 spotify wrapped, now that it dropped (Finally?). If you’re ever wondering if Spotify is accurate or not, I am here to dig into it, with my own data that I’ve been collecting on the back end via my Last FM account!

Top 5 artists thoughts and explanation

I’m a forever pop girlie. One of my earliest memories was me listening to Mariah Carey’s song Fantasy, which is so on brand, it hurts. There really isn’t a time in my lifetime where I thought pop music was a bad thing… only the baddest girls get it. With that in mind, my Spotify Wrapped was very obviously gonna have the pop music holy trinity of 2024 at the very tippy top. The Charli, the Chappell, and the holy Sabrina. I’m nothing if not consistent, so I’m proud that I called it months ago.

The Dare was my favorite new artist of 2024. I obviously lived through the indie sleaze era, being 32, and I loved the music, the fashion, and the culture coming out of the indie scene growing up. I remember being 14 wishing I could moving to New York just to be where all the best bands were with that new york indie rock sound, and that sound over time has changed, but now there’s The Dare, recapturing the essence… So yeah, I’m a fan, and I hope I see him live someday!

Lastly, my favorite boys of all time, The Arctic Monkeys rounded out the list in 5th place. They are my comfort band, and they’ll probably always be on my top 5 for life, so yeah!

Top 5 songs deep dive

Okay so my songs are so simple to understand once you know my top 5 artists list. I have two songs from Charli XCX’s Brat album, Two songs from The Dare’s album, and rounding out the top 5 is Espresso by Sabrina Carpenter…

Von Dutch - Charli XCX

Von Dutch is incredible for obvious reasons, but in case you need a reminder as to why… It’s a song for the baddest girls out there about knowing you’re living your life… Maybe someone out there doesn’t like that, and they’re judging you? But they’re just jealous because they’re not living like you. It’s giving… rent free, honestly. really inspiring when you’re just wanting to break societal norms or forget what others might think about you for trying something different.

Perfume - The Dare

Its just a song about people loving your perfume. Its simple, its new york indie rock, iggy pop and LCD sound system and The Yeah Yeah Yeahs all in one song. Like just take it in, and imagine you’re dancing in the dark wearing a leopard print dress with red ballet flats. You’re sweating, and your mac eyeliner is smudged… THATS THE DARE. THAT’S PERFUME.

Everything is Romantic - Charli XCX

Everything Is Romantic? Yeah, it truly is. I was romanticizing my life far before it was the norm on social media. I still do in my day to day, just slightly more privately now. Anyway, I love the storytelling and imagery of Everything is Romantic. This song single-handedly got me to start drinking Aperol Spritz, because I wanted a neon orange drinks on the beach. Like, hell yeah girl, you’re taking me there. It makes me want to go on vacation, hence I listened to it a billion times and it came in third place on my top 5 songs

Girls - The Dare

Real lyrics from this song… “They’d say I’m too f*** horny, wanna put me in a cage. I’d probably f*** a hole in the wall the guy before made… I like girls who pregnant, girls who give it up for lent”
This man is so out of control in love with girls… honestly, its inspiring. All men should simp at the level The Dare DARES to simp. I love when a man is like “I love you so much. I’d do anything”
The Dare is bringing back yearning, and if you listen to Girls, it’s clear as day we need it back.

Espresso - Sabrina Carpenter

I’ll be honest, Espresso is good (of course), however, Spotify’s algorithm never let me forget this song existed. I could be listening to a playlist called “Emo slow songs” and Espresso would be at the top of the playlist. It’s truly inescapable. I loved it when it first dropped, but dang… It made it into my top 5 songs, even though I only actively listened to it directly on my own probably 10 times? Still, sab carp, I love you!

Chappell Roan stomping my charts on the 365 days album stats on Last FM. Love you, queen

Sorry Chappell Roan for not making top 5 song! You’re top 10 of course

I actually saw Chappell Roan live before she got so famous she was selling out headliner stages, BUT… it really goes to show how often I listen to my favorite 5 songs. I listened to her so often, I am unwell, she still didn’t crack top 5. I feel insane? Don’t sweat it though, her album was my most played over the last 365 days… I just usually listen to the entire album all the way through every time, but some of the top 5 songs were played on repeat as singles!

Breaking down Spotify Wrapped accuracy with Last FM

Alright, so I said I would break down how I already knew my Wrapped before Wrapped dropped, and that’s because I have been sending my listening data from spotify directly to my Last FM account since 2012, so I tracked and recorded all my listening habits far before Spotify Wrapped was a thing. I actually started my Last FM account when I was 16/17, and it’s been tracking my listening habits since I was a teenager.

If you’re ever curious how to do it yourself… I have no answers for you. I attached these two accounts together when I was 20, and they’ve been actively working together this entire time, with a few blind spots here or there due to updates from both sides that disconnected the data temporarily.

(I think you can still connect them today, by making a Last FM account, and allowing scrobbling from your spotify account.)

Photo of how to connect your spotify to Last FM

I will include some photos of my top artists, albums, and songs, so you can see with your own eyes that my wrapped was mostly CORRECT. If yours has something embarrassing at the top, I’m sorry to tell you this…  But if you’re really concerned with the results being “cool” enough for indie heads, you can just make a Last FM, and track your listens year round! It’s free, and collecting your listening data is so neat and fun!

If you’ve gotten this far, thank you for reading! I just love data… I always thought I hated it, because math in high school was my least favorite subject, BUT… as I have gotten older, and I grew an interest in social media management, algorithms, and user insights, my love for data… Okay, actually wait… I have been tracking my listening habits since I was 17, maybe I always loved data???? LOL… Honestly, we all do. That’s why Spotify Wrapped has a chokehold on society as a whole.

Anyway, Thanks again for reading my blog, and if you want to make your own music data, I suggest scrobbling to Last.FM to track your listens.

Comment below to add your spotify wrapped results if you’re proud of them, like myself? PS: Here’s a copy playlist of my wrapped, I swear, its accurate! Here’s a photo of the real playlist for the freaks who love the data…

The list…. 1.0
